  • Essay / Cultural and Social Changes in Taiwan - 2774

Off the southeast coast of the Pacific super nation, China, lies a humble and sovereign nation, Taiwan. After many years of conflict, Taiwan has become a ray of light for developing countries in the Pacific. Its culture stems from its Chinese ancestors and its century-old religious beliefs have faced the iron walls of today's society. Social changes in Taiwan have opened the eyes of many of its citizens as they face a turbulent world. With a thriving economy and endless conflict with its tyrannical neighbor, Taiwan is an exploration of many opportunities. During the 15th and 16th centuries, Dutch and Spanish settlers came to Taiwan in search of gold. A rumor first circulated around the world in 1636 that gold dust was found in present-day Pingtung in southern Taiwan, leading to the arrival of the Dutch and Spanish in 1624 (Mack, 2013). When the Dutch and Spanish settlers arrived, there was no gold. However, sulfur was. The importance of sulfur in the world at this time ensured that miners would discover the main ingredient for gunpowder. It was a huge discovery that held the Dutch and Spanish back until the end of the 16th century. When news of the discovery of sulfur reached mainland China, Chinese miners quickly invaded Taiwan in 1662 and expelled the European settlers. China was experiencing a significant sulfur shortage due to a major fire that destroyed its supplies. China did not enter Taiwan with a quick invasion like the Dutch and Spanish. After years of conflict with Taiwan's ruling party, China managed to defeat the Taiwanese empire and claim the territory. Much of the genetics of early Chinese miners can still be found in the region today. Chinese rule over Taiwan was short-lived. In the 18th century, in the Asia-Pacific region, middle of paper ......r, Taiwanese farmers still wore straw hats on their rice cakes. Western clothing styles have taken over the clothing worn by Taiwanese people. This is partly due to the curiosity of the Taiwanese people and the comfort of doing business with the Western world. Taiwan is a wonderful country that any lifestyle can enjoy. The nation has thrived through countless invasions from foreign entities and has continued to thrive. At a time when the global market has shifted to the Asia-Pacific theater, Taiwan has capitalized on the available opportunities. Taiwan continues to prove that intimidation from its northern aggressor will not be tolerated as it continues to strengthen its ties with the West. Taiwan is a precious gem with a multitude of cultures, traditions, beliefs and ideologies. No matter what attracts the traveler, it is certain that Taiwan has a lot to offer..
