Essay / Diversity Affecting Academic Writing - 1299
Often, students don't even bother to look at the comments a professor has made on an assignment. According to Timothy Quinn, author of the article A Crash Course on Giving Grades, students often don't even read the comments a professor puts on an essay, but focus strictly on the grade, tarnishing the idea that they should improve in certain areas. (Quinn). The instructor's personal comments are almost always completely ignored by students who simply care about the grade they receive, which should force most English instructors to rethink their grading strategies. “[Students] must say something on a given topic, whether or not they feel attracted to the topic and whether or not they have something to say” (Hounsell). He means that English teachers are effective in their work, but students sometimes lack this feeling of requirement to write an adequate essay. A professor cannot simply read the essay and evaluate it based on the student's arguments and opinions, but must focus on the structure and content of the essay, which is the key to success in many areas of life, such as a career. Vocabulary, grammar, sentence form and correct citations are all standards that must be respected.
