Essay / Module 5 Reflection - 603
Journal Entry: Analysis ReflectionThroughout this course, I learned a lot about myself and my thoughts about literacy on my campus. When I started this course, I had no real concept of literacy on my campus because we were not included on the physical education staff. I did not participate in professional development and was not pushed to contribute to literacy development. My self-knowledge was lacking to say the least on the concept of literacy and how to develop it before taking this course. When I completed the survey after reading it, I knew that the one area my school was lacking was “formal and in-depth” continuing professional development in literacy, built into the curriculum and offered to all staff. I knew this was a problem on my campus because not everyone on campus receives the same professional development. I wanted to chat and talk about how my position would impact literacy if we received the same training. I think as a physical educator we are never asked to participate in literacy development, but we are encouraged and pushed to contribute to mathematics development. “Literacy teachers should enlist the help of other teachers and should include the physical education teacher/coach to encourage their students to read. » (Richardson, 2011 p. 47) I think this quote correlates with the point I am trying to make, which is that we could have a positive impact on literacy development if we are included in the literacy development. My self-knowledge lacks information about literacy because we have never been trained in my district and I hope this can change and bring equity. Equity is important because I believe every teacher should be involved in training that can help them benefit...... middle of paper ...... Additionally, literacy development is a crucial part of the state's standardized test and is tied to whether the school receives state and federal funds based on its performance. Ultimately, it is important that your school leader has the skills to assess school-wide literacy so that you know what your results are and how you should map your teaching so that you can help improve your students' individual results and grade-level goals. We always need to think about how we can help students reach their highest level, so knowing how to develop their literacy and test their knowledge will be a key part of what an administrator needs to be able to do.
