  • Essay / Becoming a Historian - 1207

Becoming a historian requires many different skills and starts with becoming familiar with the workplace. For example, one must receive the appropriate funds to keep a historic building alive by writing grants and educating the community using good public speaking skills. Additionally, I need to hone your research skills to install exhibits and complete appropriate training before beginning the archiving process. Sandy, the curator, showed me around the Milford Historical Society. I moved some necessary books from one place to another in the Bryan-Down house. I also sorted out some biographies of the Ells family members. Sandy reviewed the Hartford conference preliminaries. Once Sandy left, Ardienne, soon to become past president of the Milford Historical Society, and I picked out a costume for the field trips. I found that during the first educational tours, I will observe what Ardienne does. I was told to arrive at nine in the morning for each school tour and a tour will be added for June 10th. The next day I went to the conference in Hartford. Marcia Winter, the new president of the Milford Historical Society, attended a grant-writing conference with me at the Hartford Legislature. There, I made many connections with other historical societies, museums, and collection maintenance support agencies. I have a whole list of places I can contact now to visit, intern or find information about my future. One of the most important lessons I learned about getting a grant is that you have to do a lot of community projects to show how important the historic building is to continue to maintain the building or archives therein find. After this lecture it was time to start the school visits to interact with......in the middle of the paper work......al. It was explained to me how the data entry sheets would be made and, later, how we would all put this data onto the computer in the Past Perfect archiving program. I was told about the terminology relating to data archiving and that I will always work in groups of at least two when archiving data. We will start archiving the data next week. Additionally, I received a past perfect training disk, so I could better learn the program on my own. I'm supposed to be a major resource in this program for the rest of the Society members, so I have to learn everything about it to be a minor expert. Therefore, thanks to this internship, I have already acquired important skills as a historian. In conclusion, my first two weeks of internship were filled with eye-opening experiences that will prepare me for my future field. I have completed thirty and a half hours of my internship hours so far.
