Years after the publication of his books; the literary world considered him an icon of travel writing (Preston 341). William Dampier influenced many imaginations of authors who read his books (Preston 345). Without William Dampier, there might not have been Robinson Crusoe, Friday, and other books influenced by William Dampier. Daniel Defoe has studied many of William Dampier's stories from his book. William Dampier was a great writer of his time. He became a successful travel writer in 1697 after his first book “A New Journey Around the World”. This book was the first first-person account of a circumnavigation by someone on board a ship (Preston 140). This book made him a celebrity in England. It was the first travel story to include action and discovery. His book became very popular and was translated into many languages and sold around the world (Mémoires de Dampier 6). His second book was entitled “Travels and Descriptions”. This book complements his first book, providing more details about his journey. The book was published in 1699; another book he wrote called “A Voyage to New Holland” was published in 1703. This book focused primarily on the Roebuck expedition to Australia.
