The Microsoft Encarta Dictionary defines greed as "an irresistible desire to have more of something like money than is actually needed." This definition cannot be disputed because it is clear and simple, giving the essence of the word. But for millions, even billions, of people, greed is something else. Some people describe greed as a quality of evil, selfishness, and corruption. While these views may be partly true, greed cannot be condemned as solely an escape from Pandora's Box. Let us admit that greed pursues actions guided by rational self-interest. This means that anything acquired besides food and water at someone else's expense, no matter how little it is affected, can be defined as greed. Greed is a driver of the world's well-being; all attempts to eliminate greed from humanity have ended in disaster. Almost all inventions today and yesterday are the result of greedy people. Most jobs and companies are created because of greed because it is a motivator and pushes people to do their best. It is greed that encourages the consumer to buy the best product at the cheapest price, thereby creating market forces that help eliminate inefficiency and waste. Greed is an asset to humanity, a tool that some are able to embrace and thrive better than others. Greed, being an essential human condition, has shaped society from the beginning. In fact, some researchers believe that greed was the first major step in human achievement, when the first human wondered why he had to scavenge for basic necessities; Being greedy is part of being human. Wanting a new car, being loved by another, or desiring the feeling of doing good by feeding the needy, these are all factions of greed...... middle of paper ......th supplier and consumer, because both must agree to a set of conditions in order to complete a transaction. It follows that greed is responsible for creating market forces that create and maintain fairness, efficiency and, therefore, optimal use of resources. Greed is a natural consequence of trying to get the most for the least. Since the beginning, humans have been greedy to the point that now it is part of being human to be greedy. There is no one on Earth who has never been stingy and never will be. The first person to walk this planet without ever having been greedy will no longer be human. Greed is valuable to ourselves, to society, and to our species. Humans act like a swarm, when each follows their own personal interests; we seem to follow an organized pattern. From chaos comes perfect order. An order governed solely by greed.
