  • Essay / Animal Farm - 2515

    I. SUBJECTAnimal farm is a novel about animals developing their own society and the abuse of power that results. The story takes place on an imaginary farm in England, Manor Farm. The novel begins as the farm owner, Mr. Jones, falls asleep drunk. The animals then gather in the barn where a wild boar, Old Major, gives a speech to his fellow animals about his dream that one day all animals will be free from the tyranny of man and in perfect companionship. Two pigs, Napoleon and Snowball, plot to drive Mr. Jones off the farm. They succeed with the other barnyard animals, but the most serious conflict is revealed when Snowball and Napoleon argue over the distribution of power. Over the years, Napoleon and Snowball engage in numerous disputes over the running of a successful farm. Snowball creates committees to educate the other animals on the farm while Napoleon is not interested in this, he thought that the training of young people should have priority over the education of adult animals. He secures a group of nine puppies and takes them under his wing. Over the years, Napoleon and the snowball continued to collide. Their most explosive argument took place over Snowball's idea to build a windmill. When the time came to vote to approve the construction of the mill, Napoleon let out a strange groan and the nine dogs he was training came out of their hiding places. The fierce attack dogs chased Snowball from the farm. With Snowball gone, Napoleon gained what he had always wanted, complete control of Animal Farm. Under Napoleon's leadership, he and the remaining pigs became more and more like humans. At the end of the novel, Napoleon plays cards with a group of humans at Mr. Jones' old house. While common animals looked through the window...... middle of paper ...... two legs it refers to a human and in the case of four legs it refers to an animal. This reification says that all animals had a rebellion built into them. “The rebellion ran across the countryside” (46.) IV GENRE The main genre of Animal Farm is a fable. A fable is “A brief story told to indicate a moral.” The characters are often animals, but people and inanimates are sometimes central” (Harmon 467 68). In Orwell's Animal Farm, the main characters are animals and the reader learns that when a leader has an excessive amount of them, it will lead to corruption. Animal Farm can also be classified as a subgenre of allegory.
