Sophocles wrote the classic tragedy Antigone in 496-406 BC. This play dramatizes the conflict between personal morality and human law by representing each conflict through two characters; Antigone and Creon. In this play, Antigone decides to bury her brother Polynices despite the decree of King Creon. After Antigone is captured, Creon decides that the death penalty will be carried out. This sets off a chain reaction of conflict between Antigone and Creon, both filled with pride and will. The refrain states that the gods punish the proud vigorously, but that punishment brings wisdom. ( )In almost every play, it is common for two characters to be in conflict, but one could argue that this play depicts a power struggle. Is this a conflict over who does the right thing or is this play about the power struggle between a ruling king and a strong woman? Antigone plays the role of a woman defying the control of a king, something we don't hear about at the time of the play. Antigone represents most of Aristotle's criteria for a classical tragedy, especially a tragic conflict. This conflict arises between two characters whose struggle for power causes tragedy throughout the play. It is obvious that power will be the cause of the tragedy at the beginning of the play. Morality versus law is the main conflict that characterizes this play. Each side of this conflict is represented by the two main characters of this play; Antigone as the morality of an individual and Creon as the power of the law. Antigone rises up and becomes a threat to the law that Creon made. Meeting the criteria of a tragedy, Antigone presents two characters who fulfill the role of a tragic hero. Both Antigone and Creon are raised from birth, make a mistake that causes a ...... middle of paper ...... woman raised with resilient morals? Sophocles did not make this play about a man and a man in conflict, but rather about a woman and a man, and for a reason. This play was meant to show its audience a new type of woman, one who could stand up for herself and defend herself. This was a change for the times, but it had a big impact. Antigone could be considered the female version of Creon; both stubborn, strong and passionate. They come into conflict when neither is ready to reverse their position, each being determined in their own way. Two tragic heroes who have a positive goal in mind, but are doing it the wrong way. In conclusion, when you have a play based on tragedy, conflict is an element that creates the content of the play. Antigone and Creon represent this tragic conflict, their struggle for power helped convey the deeper meaning of the play..
