  • Essay / Should abortion be legalized? - 1077

The topic I chose for my argumentative essay concerns the topic of abortion. Abortion has been a controversial subject for a very long time. The dictionary definition of abortion is “A medical procedure used to terminate a pregnancy and cause the death of the fetus” (Merriam-Webster). Many people think that this procedure is wrong and immoral. These people, described as “pro-life,” often forget that making abortion illegal does not mean that abortion will be stopped. In fact, by making abortion illegal you will lead to an increase in the number of unsafe abortions, which can lead to a much higher mortality rate for women seeking abortions. This makes the term "pro-life" somewhat ironic because of the future implications of their decision to make abortion illegal. The first argument in favor of maintaining the legality of abortion concerns the case of rape victims. In 1996, the Medical University of South Carolina conducted a study and found that there was about a 5 percent chance that women who were raped would become pregnant. This means that approximately 32,000 women become pregnant each year as a result of rape in the United States. Of these 32,000 women, only 32.2% decided to keep the baby while the majority of women decided to have an abortion (NCBI). Those who do not support abortion believe that the raped woman should be forced to keep the child even if she is not up to it financially, emotionally or mentally. The child whose new mother is now responsible may struggle every day with being disadvantaged, which is not a good situation for a child. This means that women who are victims of rape cannot decide what they want. do with their bodies regarding pregnancy, contrary to the law. This infringes on freedom, and those freedoms should remain as they are. As Spock said in Star Trek: "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." » Despite all that has been said in favor of abortion, abortion should be a last resort. People should not restrict the rights of others based on their personal morality. Sometimes abortion is the best solution and who's to say that's not the case. If abortions become illegal, they could cause more deaths than they actually save. This problem can be avoided anyway. Whether you are "pro-choice" or "pro-life", you should be able to agree that schools should implement classes that teach safe sex rather than shield their children about the reality of sex and its repercussions. This gives adolescent girls the knowledge they need to make an informed decision and reduce the number of abortions in the future..
