Essay / The Importance of Diversity on Television - 1074
Hurst's book explains in chapter 8 that "whiteness is invisible to most white people", this could be a reason why there is no a lot of diversity in Hollywood, but there might also be racism and discrimination against people of different ethnicities (Hurst, 183). According to Hurst, racism is “rooted in structure and institutions, and defining racism in individualistic rather than structural terms has helped shift our focus away from white privilege” (Hurst, 184). White privilege is present in Hollywood, everything is run by white people, and it is the white writers and directors who decide who they will cast in the series or film. Racial and ethnic diversity in television programming should not be a problem in the 21st century, it is a problem of the past and should not continue. The NPR article discusses the shift to more series with "non-white actors and more non-white casting, but this remains present in 30 percent of all TV shows," which is a major improvement but still remains lots to do.
