In the story it is said that she found Liam getting dressed and taking his estrogen pills, in this case she knew something was wrong with him . Even though she knew, she didn't tell anyone in the family. It's like she doesn't want to deal with her problem. As Regan snatched the phone from her hand and tried to get her mother to pay attention to the whole situation, “her eyes fell on the phone in her hand. I don't have time for this. Not today. She lifted the cell up to her ear” (Chapter 24). Later in the book, Regan discovers that her mother secretly knew Luna and was afraid her father would find out. This shows that they are all afraid of how the father will disapprove of Luna's condition. This story depicts a family struggling to accept transgender children. The support of a family is necessary to allow Luna to be free and express herself. Parents play a very important role in the deterioration of the relationship between Liam/Luna and Regan. Regan isn't confident enough to tell her parents about the situation and can't turn to anyone for support. Luna cannot express her true self to her parents and feels tortured by an image that is not her. The mother knew what Liam wanted to be, but did not help him in his difficulties.
