  • Essay / Belief according to James - 874

BELIEF ACCORDING TO JAMESAccording to James, belief is measured by the actions of people in society. Assumptions and options are used in describing beliefs. Hypothesis can be named for anything that proposes beliefs. It can further be classified as dead or alive. A real hypothesis is something that is real and believed to be true for whoever proposes it. For example, according to him, belief in the Mahdi establishes no electrical connection with the nature of an individual. According to James, this is a dead hypothesis because beliefs are imaginary and do not produce light like electricity does. On the other hand, the hypothesis is alive according to the followers of the Mahdi. This is because the assumption among believers is in their minds. Therefore, wherever there is a will to act, beliefs predominate. Another aspect related to belief is option. The option can therefore be defined as the decision between two hypotheses. The options can be further divided into several types. Living or dead, forced or avoidable, insignificant or momentous are some of the classifications of options. A real option is one that has capital, living and forced types of options. A living option is one in which both hypotheses are alive. For example, “to be a Theosophist or to be a Mohammedan” can be classified as a dead option because both hypotheses are likely to be dead. On the other hand, “being agnostic or being Christian” can be classified as living hypotheses because such hypotheses are attractive. Additionally, several aspects are important when analyzing the authentic option according to James. For example, “choosing between going out with or without an umbrella” does not constitute a real option because it is not forced. A person can easily avoid using ...... middle of paper ...... earth according to this doctrine. Additionally, people believe that they can be in better positions if they continue to reflect and collect their experiences. The strength of this method lies in the principles and results. According to the empiricist method of forming opinions, assumptions do not matter (Earlymoderntexts 1). It does not matter whether an individual learns the truth by fair means or by an unfair act according to this method. Since belief is measured through the actions of individuals, anyone who forbids people from believing that religion is true also forbids people from acting as they should. . Action is the primary defense of religious faith. If the action required by the religious hypothesis is no different from other hypotheses, the faith is pure in the minds of individuals. Hypothesis, truth and belief give the world expressions determined by individual actions which make them pure..
