Because many benefit from America's systematic advantages, it is easier for them to turn a blind eye to this fact without recognizing their own guilt. This awareness must first be preceded by a painful recognition that race still matters in our country and that America does not offer every individual the same opportunity to succeed. This was unfortunately news to me, as it is also a fact that many people of color experience their entire lives.
