Essay / EMPLOYEE JOB SATISFACTION IN SUSTAINABLE BUSINESSES
“Employees are a vital part of the entire sustainability initiative. » – Harry Pfaff (Verizon) Pfaff's quote highlights some of Verizon's sustainability initiatives. On the “Go Green” website, Verizon employees provide suggestions on the company's sustainability strategies (Daniels, 2010). Verizon is not the only company to recognize the importance of employee participation in sustainability initiatives. Green teams at Intel and eBay organize volunteer sustainability projects in the workplace and encourage employees to participate (Fleisher, 2009). Whether you agree with Pfaff's ideas or not, there is a long list of companies that follow this principle. The E&Y survey reveals that employee engagement is one of the biggest trends in business sustainability (E&Y, 2011). The success stories have encouraged more and more companies to follow this trend. For example, Intel employees completed sustainability projects that saved the company $136 million in 2010 (Baya and Gruman, 2011). Companies engage in sustainability initiatives to achieve the triple bottom line (social, environmental and economic benefits) (Accenture and UN Global Compact). , 2013). As businesses increasingly focus on sustainability, researchers have been drawn to questions such as the financial outcome of these investments and the strategic importance of sustainability (Orlitzky & Benjamin, 2001; Orlitzky, Schmidt, & Rynes , 2003). However, employee involvement in sustainability initiatives and the effect of sustainability strategies on employee outcomes are not yet fully discovered. Given the emphasis on employee participation in company sustainability initiatives, it is critical to understand its effect on employee-related outcomes.
