At first, the scarlet letter placed on Hester's dress was intended to show shame or dishonor. But now it represents the result of Hester and Dimmesdale's sin. The judgment brought about by the Scarlet Letter results in the way she looks at society and the way society looks at Hester. Pearl is no ordinary character, she is an intriguing symbol. A symbol is something that stands for or stands for something else. In the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hester names her daughter Pearl because she is worth a lot to her, a great price, because she hopes that good will come from her committed adultery. For Hester, she is all that matters in her life; for everyone, she is the unsolved mystery that keeps Hester's criminal alive. Pearl becomes the answer to the question Hawthorne poses through Hester. Hester always carefully dresses Pearl to look like the letter showing her acceptance. Pearl is always there to remind her mother of the crime that she regrets in some ways.
