Leadership TraitsVince Lombardi once said: “Leadership is not just one quality, but rather a blend of several qualities; and although no individual possesses all the talents necessary for leadership, each man can develop a combination that will make him a leader. A person needs many qualities to become a great leader. Throughout history, four qualities have remained constant: vision, communication, fixed principles and trust. At their best, all effective leaders share the gift of setting a vision and pointing people in a direction for the future. For some, a crisis helps propel this vision. A president will only be effective if he has a compelling vision for America's future. () By the time Franklin D. Roosevelt became president of the United States, the depression had reached such depth that people were ready for change. The scale of the crisis has expanded so much that Americans are clinging to the feeling of a new life. However, when there is no crisis that helps mobilize the public, leaders must find other opportunities. For example, when the United States elected John F. Kennedy (JFK) in 1960, there was no major crisis. The Cold War had become a state of normalcy, but by talking about poverty and public service, he managed to raise expectations and make people feel like they were part of a noble cause. Having a quality vision makes it possible to mobilize external support for the leader's overarching objectives and to chart a national direction. Project Moon was the most ambitious national science project in two decades, propelling the United States into the space race. JFK outlined the idea of peaceful cooperation with the Soviets in his “Peace Strategy” speech. In his speech, he pledged to a middle of paper, tired of condescending politicians and distrustful of government. Reagan's strength of conviction, combined with his vulnerable style, indicated that he trusted the people and could be trusted.
