  • Essay / Value in Creative Practice: Photographer Jennie Gunhammar

    For this essay, I'm going to talk about the value of a body of work titled "Somewhere I've Never Traveled, Gladly Beyond" which was photographed by a young woman named, Jennie Gunhammar. I hope to include other documentary photographers in this essay, as they all have similarities. I will include some photographs such as: some photos of Nan Goldin and Therese Frare's famous photograph of David Kirby on her deathbed dying of AIDS. The photographs produced by Jennie Gunhammar for this series showed the daily life and struggle of; her twin sister Jessie and her partner Stan, who both suffer from different illnesses. Jennie Gunhammar and her twin sister Jessie were born in Sweden in 1975. Later, in 1992, they moved to London for education. Jennie and Jessie, at the age of 20 in 1995, began modeling to support their studies. Soon after, Jennie became the face of British Airwaves. In addition to modeling, Jennie studied at the London College of Communication. During this time, Jessie was studying various degrees in Gender Studies and Social Studies and also teaching at the London School of Economics and Political Science. In 2002, Jennie was diagnosed with lupus, in 2004 her twin sister was later diagnosed with the same disease. A year before Jennie released her first solo project in 2007, she had decided that she would like to follow the artistic path she always wanted. She and her sister visited different exhibitions to find inspiration for what she wanted to do. After looking at several different exhibitions, she realized that the most fascinating and moving works were the ones that were personal stories.
