  • Essay / Essay on Pornography - 2013

Pornography is an act of male supremacy and it becomes difficult to see the true harms of pornography as it is deeply rooted in our daily lives (Jeffreys 1990). Although few people are aware of the damage that pornography has done to our culture, it becomes evident when we look at the problems resulting from excessive pornography viewing. Professor Freda Briggs believes that pornography is one of the reasons why young children sexually abuse other children at school (Knowles 2014). Addiction is also another serious result of excessive porn. Although it may not be considered as serious as drug or alcohol addiction, it is nonetheless a very real problem that many men face. Gail Dines believes that young men addicted to pornography “neglect their duties, spend enormous amounts of money they do not have, isolate themselves from others, and often suffer from depression” (Dines 2010). Dr. William Struthers confirms some of them and adds that men who use pornography become controlling, very introverted, very anxious, narcissistic, curious, have low self-esteem, are depressed, dissociative and become easily distracted (Struthers 2010). It also teaches men to view women as objects and not human beings, and teaches them that sex is something a man does for himself using another woman as a means of pleasure, almost as if the woman was more a product to be used than a person.
