Essay / Farce and dramatic irony in A Midsummer Night's Dream...
In the comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream, the plethora of comic styles used by Shakespeare illustrate his intention to mock love throughout the play. The play is known for its complex and irrational plot, mainly due to the ever-changing love triangles. Once the powerful fairies become involved in the fate of the naive lovers – Demetrius, Helena, Lysander and Hermia – things get even more complicated. The complication inflicted by the fairies is attributed to the powerful love potion that Oberon, king of the fairies, gives to Puck, a mischievous fairy, to use on his wife Titania, with the intention of embarrassing and distract. The comedic styles of farce and irony appear frequently throughout the play, strengthening the play both comically and morally. A character's unconsciousness displayed with dramatic irony shows how blind love truly is. The randomness of the farce shows how love really has no reason and is very confusing, like the play itself. Farce and dramatic irony both serve as vehicles to illustrate the absurd, uncontrollable, and illogical realities of love. The dramatic irony in A Midsummer Night's Dream embodies the elaborate plot that symbolizes the complexity of love, while...... middle of paper ... particularly touches on how love is complicated and how love is blind. On the other hand, the farcical and outlandish scenes contribute to the moral that love is irrational and ridiculous. Throughout the play, it is evident that Shakespeare intends to create a crucial moral about love, while entertaining the audience. The comic aspect of the play as a whole; however, it is clearly not just meant to entertain the audience, but also serves to symbolize this larger message about love. This moral is clearly not intentional, but rather it makes a point and makes fun of love, and even society as a whole. Although some may interpret the moral differently than others, when reading or watching A Midsummer Night's Dream, it is essential to not only understand the humor, but also to harvest the moral of love and realize that humor can contribute to this morality..
