What is the relationship between media use and academic performance?Technological advancements have made so many conveniences available to humans all over the world. Among the many advancements made, social media has become a widely used method of technology that allows for many networking opportunities. The empirical research experiments conducted in this study observe a variety of age, race, and gender researchers. The methods used were very practical and produced results that supported the hypothesis. Researchers predicted that Facebook and other social networks not only impact how emerging adults interact, but also negatively impact academic performance. The results both supported and identified key concepts of these researchers' hypothesis. Facebook facilitates extended social networks that develop through distant types of relationships (Manago, Taylor, & Greenfield, 2012). The findings also include that social media may have a correlation and relationship with poor academic performance. Jennifer Walsh and others conducted a study in 2013 called Media Use and Academic Outcomes of Female College Students: Results from a Longitudinal Cohort Study. These participants were included in a larger portion of this study. The study focused on health behaviors and relationships, but the main study focused on media use and academic achievement. This study was an example of the most common type of descriptive research investigation. The researchers conducted a longitudinal study, in this case, a within-participant study, because the same sample of respondents is interviewed more than once. The independent variable was media usage and the dependent variable was the note... middle of paper ... deviated from the original document and there was no exaggeration. The news article even included a limitation of the current study mentioned in the review, as well as other implications for further research. In conclusion, the results of this study provide excellent information on the relationship between social media use and academic achievement. Although two forms of popular social media use were tested – new media and old media – as well as academic achievement, researchers can infer that they are related. On the other hand, this will not be true for all academics who use social media frequently. More so, this study serves as a general understanding and foundation of the relationship between the two variables. Previous research, this research and other research to follow will serve as a general basis for the effect of social media use on academic achievement..
