Being a secondary educator, or high school teacher as it is commonly called, can be a rewarding career. One who holds a position in this field can expect many benefits and opportunities associated with being a teacher. The Path to Becoming an Educator has been published for review in many places. Information on salaries and work environment is also readily available. Becoming an educator begins with educating the candidate. Most states require at least a bachelor's degree to teach in a public school. In addition to a degree, most states also require a teaching certificate before being hired in this field. Some states require a teacher to pursue a master's degree after completing the certification process and beginning work as a teacher. The requirements for teaching in a private, magnet, or charter school vary in different regions of the country. Although no specific skills are required to become a teacher, there are many skills that can be helpful. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics website, "many schools report difficulty filling teaching positions in certain subjects, including mathematics, science (especially chemistry and physics), English as a second language and special education” (Employment Outlook tab). Being able to speak a second language or having a certificate in special education could make a future teacher a more valuable asset to a school or employer. Some other skills listed on the aforementioned website include communication and teaching skills as well as great patience. Having some of these skills could affect a new teacher's salary. Maintaining the highest possible GPA should be important for anyone looking to teach at the high school level. Being a high school educator is an important job. As a high school educator, you prepare students for life after high school, including postsecondary education, entry into employment in their chosen career field, or perhaps even service military.
