Essay / A comparison between To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell...
A comparison between To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell and The Sunne Rising by John DonneThe two poems "To His Coy Mistress" and "The Sunne Rising " were written by metaphysical poets, this is one of the many similarities between the poems. However, there are also a number of differences between them. In both poems there is a clear connection to the theme of “Carpe Diem” which simply means “seize the day”. The poems are about time and how it passes. They seem in a hurry. The content of the poem is that Marvell is writing a poem to his romantic partner. They are truly in love with each other and their love is very passionate for each other. However, there is something missing in their relationship and that is the sexual side. They did not have sex and the poem is about Marvell trying to persuade his partner to make love to him. He believes that time is running out and that we must “seize the present moment”. Life expectancy was lower at the time of the poem, and he doesn't want to leave things too late. There were many types of illnesses at that time, and health services were very limited. Today, our life expectancy is on average 77, but back then, anyone reaching the age of 40 was considered older. He obviously feels that his partner needs a little help to make love; he shows this by calling her his "Coy Mistress", meaning his shy or reluctant wife. The poem is divided into three paragraphs, which is unusual for poems. These three paragraphs state the three stages of the argument. The first part is trying to say that if they had all the time in the world, then there wouldn't be a need to work in the middle of a paper...may make you happy, but love is more important. in life. Money can be loved but never loved like true beauty. I believe it is imperative that we look at the poems from a different perspective. Both compliment the women mentioned but both have different messages. “To His Coy Mistress” is a persuasive poem that contains flattery to try to convince the woman to take their relationship to the next level. In “The Sunne Rising,” the message is that love is more important than wealth. The main themes are time and love and both are conveyed very cleverly with both wit and deception. I enjoyed both poems because they both showed strong similes and real feelings. I preferred Andrew Marvell's poem because it had a sense of urgency and its rhythm was what I found exciting because I never knew what to expect next in the poem..
