  • Essay / The American dream in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott...

Everyone in America has their own American dream. These dreams can vary from starting a family to becoming a wealthy businessman. The American dream was strongest in our country in the early 1920s. America was just beginning to triumph over poverty. People were doing better as a country. Carrie Latet once said, “May I never wake up from the American dream.” With Carrie, this was the wish of the vast majority of Americans. In 1929, the Great Depression hit and many Americans had to wake up from their dreams of success. The Great Gatsby, a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerlad, is set during the Roaring Twenties. The main character of this novel was a man named Jay Gatsby. Fitzgerald used Gatsby's life as a microcosm of 1920s America. Like most Americans, Gatsby had a dream. His dream was to be part of the rich class of society. This dream of Gatsby was realistic. Whenever a person has a dream, it can always be achieved if they do it correctly. However, Gatsby did not achieve his dream in the right way. He became rich, but it made him lonely. Because of his wealth, he could not tell who his real friends were. People pretended to be Gatsby's friend just to be invited to his extravagant parties. From the outside, it appears that Gatsby has achieved his dream. If you look closely, you will realize that he didn't really realize his dream. If a person achieves their dream, but they are not satisfied with it, I don't think that counts as achieving a dream. Gatsby grew up poor. Since he was a child, he dreamed of being part of the rich class. Young Gatsby swore to himself that one day he would be rich. Middle of paper ... there was an explosion in the morale of this great country in the Roaring Twenties. Geraldine Ferraro's statement, "If you enjoy everything America has to offer, there's nothing you can't accomplish," is a vague but applicable description of Gatsby's dream. He wanted to take advantage of everything there was in this great country, because he had been denied it his whole life. The Americans wanted exactly the same thing. Before the end of the First World War it was all for one and one for all, but in the 1920s it seemed to be all for me and nothing for you. We all have our own dreams, whether it's being rich, famous, owning a business, or starting a family. Gatsby had his dreams and we have ours. Sometimes when we want something so much, we forget who we are and the morals and values we were raised on. It happened to the American people in the 1920s and to Jay Gatsby..
