  • Essay / Conflict Theory of Health and Medicine - 1008

This problem does not only occur in small towns or in the United States. Many places around the world experience the same health problems. A BMJ investigation took place in Britain, where they found that “cheap drugs… [are] blocked by pharmaceutical companies” (Donnelly 2015). Rather than providing a more efficient way for everyone to get the treatment they need, capitalist companies simply sell expensive products to get more money in their pockets. This creates inequities within our system, as those who can afford it are the only ones who benefit from treatment while those who cannot are left struggling. The structure of our society is controlled by capitalism and greed for money. There are things that citizens and individuals can do, like protest and join different types of movements in order to make their voices heard. The only problem with these movements is that since our society is deeply rooted in capitalism, a change for the better of society is not possible.
