Entry Level Firefighter Selection ProcessThe selection process for entry level firefighters in the Hurst, Euless and Bedford (HEB) area is similar to that across the country. The process begins with a written assessment. The written test includes written comprehension; interpretation tables; situational judgment; logical reasoning; apply basic mathematical rules; mechanical aptitude; spatial sense; card reading; and vocabulary. (IPMA AssessmentServices 2003) These tests are typically purchased from the InternationalPublic Management Association (IPMA). Once the candidate has passed the written exam, they move on to the physical agility test. Agility tests consist of job-specific tasks that firefighters typically perform at the scene of an emergency. The agility test must be completed within a specified time frame. The next step in the selection process is the interview with the jury. Applicants are interviewed by law enforcement personnel to determine their value system and decision-making skills. At the end of all interviews, candidates are ranked by the panel and background investigations begin. Background investigation includes verification of employment history, past job performance, reference checks and credit checks. Applicants who meet departmental requirements take a polygraph examination. The polygraph is used to verify the information provided by the applicant during the interview process and the background investigation is factual. The candidates are then interviewed by the fire chief. During this interview, the candidate has the opportunity to explain any flaws discovered during the background...... middle of paper ...... later. One weakness identified is the physical agility test. Women who take the agility test tend to lack the strength and endurance necessary to pass the exam. One method that could improve women's success rate is to establish a fitness program for potential applicants. This program would include strength training and cardiovascular training. Active participants in the training program would then have the physical requirements necessary to pass the exam.
