Essay / Homophobia - 1507
Are you homophobic? I hope that's not the case. Homophobia is a very common and, in my opinion, horrible, popular social phenomenon in our society today. The Oxford Dictionary defines homophobia as an irrational aversion to homosexuality and homosexual people (“homophobia”). Homophobia is therefore fundamentally an aversion, disgust or hatred towards gay, lesbian and bisexual people. It is almost always accompanied by discrimination against these people which very often results in verbal or physical attacks felt by them. This is a very common problem in our daily world that usually goes unnoticed or ignored. This affects a very large group of people and can still hurt you even if you are completely heterosexual, so you have to stop being homophobic and learn to respect homosexual and bisexual people. We need to stop judging people based solely on their sexual orientation; we must stop discriminating! Homophobia in our society today is wrong and immoral because of the immense harm it causes to so many of us. This is why we should work to eradicate it from our daily lives. Homophobic people, as I mentioned before, generally discriminate against gays and lesbians. and bisexual people through physical and verbal offenses; but what exactly are these offenses? In our heterosexist society, it is common for people to verbally discriminate against homosexual and bisexual people in non-violent and trivial ways. These common ways include telling jokes, name-calling, publicly insulting gay, lesbian, or bisexual people solely because of their sexuality, or using words like "gay" to insult someone. Among all the words used to insult someone that can be heard in a school environment, the word "gay" occupies up to 83% of the words...... middle of paper ...... and offers help if they are being bullied or if other people are also causing them harm. If we see someone being bullied because of their sexual orientation, we need to talk to the bully and resolve this issue, so that the bully stops being so homophobic and therefore stops abusing the person gay, lesbian or bisexual to whom he was unfair. We can still protest peacefully, for example by writing a persuasive essay like I did, by posting about what homophobia is and how we can (and should) stop it, or by simply talking simply to a homophobic person you know and putting them in touch. stop being like this. We can really contribute to the reduction of homophobia and heterosexism in our society if we work to eradicate it in ourselves and those close to us by putting an end to our prejudices and our discriminatory expressions against homosexual people. and bisexual..
