Essay / West versus East in Wagner Matinee - 793
The time of the new Wagner Matinee was a remarkable period in history. The world was being discovered and industrial industry was just beginning to become the protagonist. The new industry made life easier for people living in very compact areas, such as the eastern seaboard of the United States. They had privileges such as trains, electricity and many other honors. These were manifested through the speaker's benefits in Boston. However, in areas where the population was low, settlers did not enjoy all the advantages that people in already settled areas had. It was hard for the people of the isolated plains; especially if they were already adapted to industry lifestyles. In Wagner Matinee, the speaker's aunt was born and raised in Boston and was also influenced by music in every way possible. She played the piano, listened to famous composers and even traveled to Paris for the privilege of listening to an opera. It was a great surprise to her wealthy family to learn that she had run away to live in the new frontier of Nebraska with a young man. Cather wrote this text to identify the strength and endurance of the people of the western frontier. His examples were the physical harshness of the West, the isolation of the new age, and the persistent silence that the pioneers had to face in their time. It has never been easy to colonize and explore new lands, and it certainly never will be. Even at the time of the Wagner Matinee text, it was still extremely difficult to work on the new lands that the United States was colonizing. It's land, weather, and travel are all unexpected, so there's really no way to properly approach the new land. Middle of paper people seem barbaric from the sophisticated people of Boston. However, this was not Willa Cather's intention, she only wanted to glorify the strength and endurance needed to be a pioneer. She had written this text to draw the attention of cities to the true nobility of border residents. The nephew in this story, also the speaker in this text, had laid bare the difficult world of being a pioneer and respected his aunt all the more because of her persistence in staying apart in this isolated world. The really depressing part of the story was the end, when the music was over, Aunt Georgiana shouted to her nephew that she didn't want to go back to the West. His nephew understood because he had experienced the harsh environment of an unstable land. The main theme of this writing by Cather was to praise the pioneers who had colonized the land of America for the people of the future..
