Essay / Analysis of My Last Duchess and the Laboratory
“My Last Duchess” and “The Laboratory” are two very diverse but similar poems written by Robert Browning over a period of three years. In this essay, I will carefully examine the techniques, language, and imagery that Browning uses in these two poems. I will also compare the two poems together and see how Browning creates the character's voice and character in each poem. My Last Duchess was written by Robert Browning in 1842. The poem is a dramatic monologue. The poem flows because there are pauses in the middle of the line (caesura) rather than the poem stopping at the end of each line. I think this is deliberate on Browning's part to make the poem flow more smoothly. The poem begins with the Duke simply showing his art collection and various works to his emissary. He then arrives at a realistic portrait of his own wife, now deceased. In my opinion, the Duke remembers her as a work of art created on his orders. This is a general pattern throughout the poem where the Duke sees himself as the most prestigious man who ever lived. He believes that men are the dominant race over women. He is the complete picture of the sexism of his time. Browning keeps some images vague in the poem. I think this is to let the reader of the poem think about the Duke's attitude. Perhaps one could say that he has a flirtatious wife who cherishes the gifts of others just as she treats those of the Duke. One might suggest that she may have had relationships with these other men, but Browning leaves that to our imagination. I believe that the Duke is an unstable man whose jealousy pushes him to the limit and finally kills his wife. He believes that total control was a natural thing for him. Let's go to the Laboratory. ...... middle of paper ...... the reader thinks about the poem as he or she sees fit. Similarly, with “My Last Duchess,” Robert Browning deliberately leaves some texts vague but some vivid to pose questions to the reader. He uses many metaphors in both poems. I think it's again for the same reason that was mentioned earlier. He's definitely trying to give the reader something to think about, but he abruptly leaves the thought up to us to imagine. In my opinion, this pattern is very common in both poems. To come to my conclusion, all of these techniques work extremely well together in both poems to yield some of the greatest poems of its time. These two poems are particularly recognized for the language, images and techniques that the poet uses to create a feeling of jealousy and disgust at the reactions of the Duke in "My Last Duchess" and the woman in "The Laboratory »..”
