  • Essay / English and European history: The Tower of London

Tower of LondonThe centuries-old fortress stands as a monument to English and European history. Through monarchs, bloody battles, prisoners to executions and a touch of every notable event in London's history, the Tower of London is renowned for much more than its magnificent appearance. The tower was founded by William, Duke of Normandy when he conquered England in 1066. He began building the fortress as a declaration of his power to the English people who were angered by his rule. William invaded England and defeated King Harold and his armies at the Battle of Hastings. When he began construction, the White Tower was built, which was the first step in many other additions to create the castle we see today. Because it was built during wartime, the tower was designed according to the principle of defense. Roman walls, guard towers and gates were erected around the tower. Later other monarchs would also add additional defensive walls, moats, more towers and strengthen the towers' military guards, the Yeomen Wardens or more commonly known as Beefeaters. Many monarchs have continually improved the White Tower, aiming to make it more and more secure. Since its beginnings, the White Tower has been the most imposing part of the royal castle. Royal monarchs did not begin living on the land until several hundred years after its construction. In 1220, Henry III began to significantly expand the royal palace and increase the castle's defenses. When the Tower became a common venue for monarchs, it also became a new stage for weather events in England. The palace became a place for royal ceremonies and theater. Casual tower attributes like the armory, treasury, temple, castle green and even an added jewel house have all been done...... middle of paper ......s Learning Co , 1992. • DC .
