Essay / Homer's epic The Odyssey - 654
A hero is not shaped by his strengths but by the values he possesses. Homer's epic The Odyssey reveals the moral and ethical constitution of the ancient Greeks. Over time, certain cultures have developed by valuing a number of human characteristics. Those who acquire such values become respected heroes. After the fall of Troy, the epic's protagonist, Odysseus, sailed for his home, Ithaca, where his faithful wife and son awaited him. During his journey, Odysseus faced some of the fiercest adversaries known to the Greeks. Even through this tremendous journey, Odysseus and his family remained faithful to various aspects of the ancient Greeks. The Odyssey illustrates human ideals of hospitality, loyalty and perseverance. The Odyssey is a great example of an ideal that the ancient Greeks valued, the sense of hospitality toward others. Odysseus and his men were "indebted for [the Cyclops'] aid, or for any gift [he] gives, as is the custom of honoring strangers" (194-196). Not knowing Cyclopean nature, Odysseus sought hospitality because it is a Greek practice to greet strangers with gifts. For the Greeks, hospitality was a divine right, whether it was a fear of the gods or a simple duty as a human being. The Lotus Eaters seemed to be a welcoming people, “offering the sweet Lotus only to [Ulysses’] friends” (79). The Lotus Eaters kindly offered food to strangers without knowing their intentions. The Lotus Eaters were ready to share their sweet flower, which was ultimately a plant, with their guests. The Greek idea of hospitality was a reception to welcome one's visitor. Loyalty is another influential quality that the Greeks valued in people. Odysseus' ardent dog, Argos, "heard Odysseus...... middle of paper ......escence of the most influential values of the human being. The Greeks fully embraced the concept of hospitality. Some feared punishment from the gods and others were hospitable simply out of purity of heart. Loyalty is the basis of many abilities that humans possess: love, friendship, patriotism, honesty and integrity. Homer proved that the Greeks valued loyalty through his epic. Perseverance is a phenomenal quality that only the strongest possess. The Greeks meant perseverance in a person, because that is what makes a person flourish. It is values and morals that differentiate people from other beings in the world. Our morals are how we perceive a situation and how we act accordingly. Our values are what make us unique. Maybe it's the Greek influence on our culture today or it's just human nature, but our values have remained the same over time..
