    Mexican politics throughout history has been hostile, to say the least. As with many previous authoritarian regimes, Mexico's transition to democracy has been hard fought. Even today, the Mexican political system is characterized by political corruption, as evidenced by the influence of drug cartels, their corporatism and electoral fraud. It is these characteristics that make Mexico a valuable study in comparative politics. Studying Mexico, we see a country that has been relatively undeveloped (due to the aforementioned characteristics of its political system) and is hardly a democracy. The influence of Mexican drug cartels is widespread throughout Mexico. This influence is evident on an ongoing basis. Many senior officials in Mexican agencies regularly make global news when they are revealed to be under the direction of a drug trafficking operation/cartel. Stephen D.
