Essay / Social Work Practice - 752
I believe that all courses in the Social Work Department at Austin Peay State University (APSU) are intended to help prepare students for social work practice. The courses that stand out the most are the Generalist, Micro and Macro courses. In these courses, we spent a lot of time experiencing real-world scenarios or going out into the community to gain knowledge about issues within that community. These courses provided an overview of social work practice. The courses also showed us how diverse social work practice can be depending on the field of social work. The general classes provided us with a workbook and in that workbook we had many assignments in which we presented a scenario and then asked ourselves, as a social worker, how I would approach these questions. For example, I remember an instance where I was asked if I had a terminally ill client and asked to help them commit euthanasia, would I do it and what else would I do in this situation . I used the ETHIC model to help me answer this question. For me, I determined that this was not only against my values, but also against the values of the company I would be working for and that their life was more important than allowing the client to commit euthanasia. In this example, I also indicated that I could be held legally responsible and lose my license. I came to the conclusion that because I didn't have much practical knowledge, I would take this up with a supervisor to better understand the situation. Although I would respect their decision if they decided to commit euthanasia, I could not be part of that process. In Micro class, the instructor presented various scenarios from his practical knowledge. Students were given roles and the scenario to play out in class, then a...... middle of paper ......e reside and see what the problem might be. The establishment learns a lot about organizing my interview with the resident. This requires an ongoing effort to analyze and process the interview and how I perceive the resident to take the information or question asked. Many times I will have to ask questions a little differently depending on how the client answers the question. For example, I may ask you about some of your past occupations and the resident may glance at me and then I will ask you again about some of the jobs you have had in the past. Being able to prepare and adjust for the interview helps me get all the necessary information from the resident. Many times I have found that if I visit with the resident before having to conduct the interview, they are more willing to share their information to help me answer the questions..
