Essay / Book Report: Hideout by Gordon Korman - 934
The book HIDEOUT, written by Gordon Korman, begins with an adventurous group of middle schoolers who come to the rescue of one of their friends to hide a fierce Doberman from a thief crooked. the businessman can hurt him. The story begins in early August, in Cedarville, New York, with the classmates all going to summer camp but they didn't know they would be taking a dog with them. There are two main characters in each of the summer camps and the story takes place in each of these three camps. These summer camps take place in the woods of the Catskill Mountains in New York. These are Camp Ebony Lake, Camp Ta-da and Camp Endless Pines. These three camps may be in the same woods, but they are scattered and far from each other. There is a different theme for each side and this makes the book more interesting as the setting is constantly changing. The main characters of this story are 6 friends from Cedarville Middle School, a crooked businessman and a Doberman Pincher. Griffin Bing is the “man with the plan” and he organizes the missions in which this group of friends gets involved. Ben Slovak is Griffin's best friend and he has a ferret that goes with him everywhere to help him with his narcolepsy or sleep disorders. . Pitch Benson is an expert climber and she helps them reach impossible places. Melissa Dukakis is a computer expert, which comes in handy for standbys. Logan Kellerman is an actor and he knows how to entertain people. Savannah Drysdale is an animal whisperer who helped them get past the guard dogs. S. Wendell Palomino or “Swindle” is a crooked businessman who has caused these friends a lot of trouble. Luthor is a huge, temperamental Doberman who is mid-paper and no one in this book has superpowers. There's also nothing about their situation that couldn't happen to a person in real life. I think the only thing that makes this story different from non-fiction is that it wouldn't be as entertaining if it were about real events. It would be hard to think that there would be so many twists and turns in a real story. My favorite part of this story was when Griffin hid Luthor in his luggage bag and the Doberman chewed up all his clothes. When they arrived at the camp, the camp instructor thought he was poor and told him he would help get him some clothes. The clothes he would bring her were from found objects. Every day, Griffin had to wear a silly shirt with Care Bears or a photo of the bride and groom kissing and framed with pink and red flowers. He was embarrassed but he wore them anyway.
