  • Essay / Fragmentation of Rajaji National Park - 794

Fragmentation of Rajaji National Park: Rajaji National Park is attempting to secure corridors for its wildlife, elephants in particular, although this remains a cumbersome and difficult task. These corridors have been fragmented by villages, a national highway, water canals, railways, transmission lines and even an army munitions depot. These corridors are narrowed and fragmented, posing a serious threat to tigers as well as elephants. An elephant moves long distances and because it is large, an elephant-friendly corridor is suitable for any other wildlife in the forest, such as tigers, deer or other smaller animals. Uttarakhand is home to a significant population of tigers and elephants and the wildlife corridors are therefore of particular importance, especially as it lies right next to the Jim Corbett National Park, which continues to be a habitat supporting the one of the densest tiger populations in India. Corridors are valuable tools. for wildlife conservation because they allow animals to connect to different landscapes. The fragmentation of these corridors could have harmful long-term effects. Some of these effects include genetic isolation, habitat fragmentation within the same forest, and increased human-elephant conflict in adjacent areas. Most of the wild animals and elephants have been threatened mainly by the railway line and the national roads which pass between the forests. As Rishikesh city is located right between the eastern and western areas of Rajaji National Park, the path of many wild animals is obstructed. One solution to this problem that we are working on is to build a traffic overpass so that animals can use a corridor to move from one side to the other. This will likely take many years... middle of document ...... are: -- Commercial forestry, which involves cutting roads through forests and harvesting (felling down) trees that were previously important. sources of shelter or food for some species. - Dams, which alter the flow of rivers, change water temperatures and can prevent fish from swimming upstream to spawn. - Farmers clear land, remove large quantities of water from local sources and introduce pesticides and chemical fertilizers to the environment.- Urban development, which clears and asphalts land. This alters local water cycles by increasing surface runoff and reducing groundwater supplies. Wildlife in Rajaji National Park suffers from habitat loss and destruction due to fragmentation of the park, obstruction of wildlife corridors and its eastern and western sections being divided by the city of Rishikesh.
