  • Essay / Friendship in The Outsiders by SE Hinton - 1283

“Friendship is a single soul inhabiting two bodies” (Aristotle). How can this happen when two characters are so different? How can they be similar? Dallas Winston and Johnny Cade from SE Hinton's novel The Outsiders have a connection deemed unlikely due to their vast differences. Although everyone is different from each other, their similarities come into play and explain why they care so much about each other. Their differences span a wide variety, but with these differences come similarities. The differences between Dally and Johnny aren't hard to find. For starters, Johnny is the most law-abiding of the group. He always respects the law. This continues until the day he kills Bob. When he killed Bob, he knew he had broken the law. Out of nervousness, he runs away to a church with Ponyboy where Dally sends them. They camp there for days without knowing whether or not to go to the police. Dally arrives at the church to stay with them and Johnny announces "We're going back and surrendering" (87). He thinks that since he currently has no record, he will get off easier; and he knows it's the right thing to do. Unlike Johnny, Dally constantly breaks the laws. Dallas' record makes him proud. He gets into many fights and is involved in many thefts. Going to jail no longer affects him and every time a crime happens in the city, the police question Dally early. Dallas has a bad record, but that doesn't bother him because "he liked to show that he didn't care whether there was a law or not" (20). Obviously, Dally doesn't mind when he gets in trouble with the police, or the fact that he has a criminal record a mile long. In addition to their record with the fuzz, they both have a plunger...... middle of paper ......d approximately was ripped out of his hands. Johnny's death broke him to the point that his life became even more worthless than he thought. Both Johnny and Dally face problems that go hand in hand. Although they are so different, you would think it would be difficult to find similarities. In this case, Johnny and Dallas both have big differences and affinities towards each other. Opposing personalities that you wouldn't think get along actually do. The one who tries to break the law and the one who respects the law. Even though it separates them, their neglectful parents bring them closer. They both place very little value on their lives. Perhaps this happens because neither of them has parental influence. They do not have parents who love and care about them, which can make their lives worthless in their eyes. The relationship they have is what keeps them going.
