Essay / Discrimination in As I Grew Older by Langston Hughes
“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident;' that all men are created equal. » (King) Martin Luther's words are still engraved in our memories today, almost 50 years later. Years ago, rights between blacks and whites were not equal. Black people were treated as minorities and did not have the same opportunities as white people. The poem I chose to analyze, “As I Grew Older,” talks about the discrimination against black people during this time. The author uses metaphors and other techniques to share with the reader his feelings of injustice towards the black race. The author of the poem is Langston Hughes. Since he was young, it has been the color of his skin that has held him back. “He was black, poor and full of dreams that were unlikely to come true. » (Dyson) This poem relates these situations to the audience through the use of metaphors. He begins the poem by talking about a dream he had a long time ago. He compared the dream to the sun using metaphors. The poem states: “But there it was then, before me, shining like the sun – my dream. » (Hughes) The bright sun represents this dream that he had before him, clear and alive. It seems that the dream is accessible, allowing him to believe that he is capable of accomplishing and achieving it. However, soon an obstacle appears that prevents him from achieving his goal. The obstacle that appears is represented by a large wall that blocks it from the sun. “The dream seemed entirely possible at first, but then the wall “slowly rose,” showing that it seemed less and less likely as he grew. " (Allen) The wall "raised until it touched the sky" (Hughes) At one time it was difficult for his race to... middle of paper ...... and fight against the great wall until it was demolished. He must fight for the rights of his people until he can see the bright yellow sun again. “Harlem Renaissance.” : An analysis of "As I Grew Older" Np, March 17, 2012. Web.
