Social media is a platform for communication and interaction. From an educational perspective, students can better relate to teachers and other students through online media. Wankel (2011) describes this benefit by stating that "most significantly, [social media] allows students to engage with their teachers and collaborate more effectively and engagingly with their peers, and perhaps even raise awareness beyond cultural divisions. (P.83) Not only does social media provide a way to engage with teachers, but it also has the potential to eliminate bias, which helps build a school community. This means teachers and schools can better build relationships with parents and families. Social media also encourages critical thinking. Wankel says, “Social media tools give students the ability to think critically and creatively.” (p. 83) Students must solve problems and find new ways to present themselves to the world. This opportunity for extreme individuality means that students exercise their critical and creative skills as much, if not more, than in other core courses.
