“A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…” Humans have been fascinated by space for generations. They are intrigued by its lovely mystery which conceals a multitude of possibilities. Significant improvements in space discovery have opened up many opportunities for filmmakers to go to infinity and beyond. Outer space has been depicted on the big screen numerous times, from Star Wars, the epic space opera series, to Voyage Dans La Lune, the iconic French silent film, to Gravity, the award-nominated film. After the moon landing in 1969, the film industry began producing more stories about space travel; thus, a wide variety of space films aimed at different audiences have been created. Moviegoers were eager to see both over-the-top science fiction films and strictly historical biopics. A new era of cinema had begun and it revolutionized Hollywood as we know it. Le Voyage Dans La Lune by Georges Méliès is universally recognized as the first science fiction film. It was produced in 1902, 14 minutes long and hand-colored. Méliès pioneered the concept of space travel, specifically travel to the Moon, in cinema more than fifty years before Neil Armstrong took a giant step for humanity. “The plot of the silent film, a light satire criticizing the conservative scientific community of its time, was inspired by Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon (1865) and HG Wells's The First Men on the Moon (1901)” (“Journey To The Moon”). A Trip to the Moon showed the stuck-up scientists of the early 20th century a new way of looking at unfathomable space and the unknown sky.
