Essay / Halo: Ghosts of Onyx Gameplay Review - 929
Halo: Ghosts of Onyx begins in 2531 with a raid on an insurgency base by the SPARTAN-II blue team. Their goal was to recover the stolen FERNIS nuclear warheads, but they were captured by rebel General Howard Graves; a former UNSC Marine who defected to the insurgents. However, Spartan Kurt-051 manages to get away from the team before they are captured and helps the rest of the Blue Team escape capture by the insurgents. A month after the raid, the Blue Team is tasked with investigating the failure of a Shaw-Fujikawa Translight engine. Kurt is sent ahead to spot it, but as he gets closer to the engine, his equipment begins to malfunction. Eventually, the thruster he is using malfunctions and Kurt is sent spiraling into space without communication. Kurt is then picked up by ONI and wakes up a month later to be briefed on the SPARTAN-III program by Vice Admiral Margaret Orlenda Parangosky, Rear Admiral Ned Rich, Captain Aaron G. Gibson, and Colonel James Ackerson aboard the UNSC Point of No Return. . Kurt is then promoted to lieutenant junior rank and sent to Onyx to reduce 497 volunteers to 300 trainees. Kurt tests the contestants' desire for revenge against the alien juggernaut that destroyed their homes and families by having them perform a high-altitude midnight jump from Pelican dropships. Any child who didn't jump would lose their chance to be a Spartan, and any child who jumped kept that chance. Even with advanced training and semi-powered infiltration (SPI) armor, all 300 Spartans would die in Operation PROMETHEUS. Kurt returns to the Point of No Return to learn of Alpha Company's success and to begin the training of Beta Company. Kurt learns that the entire Alpha Company was wiped out during Operation: PROMETHEUS a...... middle of paper...... the Spartans. The Sangheili advance with Kig-Yar energy gauntlets while their brethren fire overhead with plasma rifles and needles. They are eliminated using grenades, rocket launchers and rifles. The Sangheili attack again, but this time with the support of Mgalekgolo. They manage to kill Holly-G003, and Kurt would be harsh. As the Covenant press on the Spartans, Kurt orders everyone through the slipspace portal and into the stockpile. Kurt stays behind to make sure Mendez, Halsey and the Spartans make it out safely. Kurt therefore sacrifices himself and denies Covenant the Forerunner technologies by detonating two FERNIS nuclear warheads, causing a chain reaction within Onyx that results in the destruction of the planet. Doctor Halsey, CPO Mendez, and Teams Blue and Saber are then trapped in a Micro Dyson sphere and attempt to find the Forerunner technology stockpile..
