Essay / Weaknesses of Virtue Theory - 857
I feel like this theory understands that people are faced with different emotions and a multitude of other variables when making decisions, whereas the other two theories seem to treat decision making as a scientific or mathematical problem. Making a decision in life requires much more than simply going through a mental checklist to determine what the right thing to do is. Virtue theory best recognizes that morality is a complex issue, which is why I find it to be the strongest theory. I mentioned that the main weakness of virtue theory is that a person can demonstrate a virtuous quality but not act morally. If I were to argue for this theory, I would argue that if a person has a high reputation, they will not manifest their virtuous qualities in morally wrong acts. Another common goal of virtue theory is: how do we determine what is a virtue and what is a vice in a world of different cultures? I would say that it is up to each individual to interpret what constitutes a virtue or a vice. There will never be a theory of morality that is universally accepted or without weaknesses, but virtue theory overall gives the best.
