Very often, the most influential situation in a person's life is one that is catastrophic and life-changing. Because people generally don't like change, they are stuck in denial of their reality until they are forced to accept it. In War, a short story by Luigi Pirandello, a group of people are forced to hear each other's stories about their war-related hardships.
