Essay / Addiction Case Study - 1145
Case Study AnalysisAPA refers to addiction when a person first begins using something for pleasure while enjoying it, but then she starts using it or doing it all the time, which then interferes with their daily life responsibilities. To analyze this case study, the perspectives used are the social and evolutionary approach to psychology. The issues analyzed are why Chris might not be able to control himself and why Jess might not want to help him. Chris may have ended up addicted due to several factors, one of which could be due to the pressure of society and the influence it could have on people. It could also have been the people he interacted with or the people he knew before that pushed him to spend a lot of money on material things. He may then have wanted to conform to fit in with the group and this could be a social norm towards them. His behavior could be explained by the theory of planned behavior/reasoned action. This was done by Ajzen and Fishbein (1980) who formulated this theory saying that this theory helps predict whether behavior is deliberate and planned or whether behavior is unintentional. Ajzen (1991) also stated that the theory, in order to change a person's behavior, must adapt their behavior to their intentions. Ajzen also said that behavior that may have occurred in the past could contribute to what a person's future behavior might become. Chris's beliefs may be important in predicting their intentions, just as it is important to know a person's attitudes. Cognitive dissonance (Festinger 1988) says that there are undesirable consequences that may indicate an event that blocks the int... . middle of paper ...... behavior, behavior develops in an individual, how the behavior arose by natural selection and how long it will survive. These levels may help to understand why Chris may have developed this shopping addiction. Evolutionary psychology uses evolutionary biology to help identify how the human mind works. This is useful to understand why Jess may be unable to decide what to do and also to explain that Chris is starting from past experiences. To conclude, when linked together, perspectives become more effective, because both the evolutionary and social approaches help explain reason. of dependence and help/love. Evolution can be linked to the social approach because it says that everyone must stick to a standard because they don't want to be seen different, which could explain why Chris admits that he has an addiction to shopping..
