Essay / De-extinction Essay - 1028
Instead of changing things to improve the future, learn from the past, and move forward, people believe that they can simply solve problems through technology. The film, From Billions to None: The Passenger Pigeon's Flight to Extinction, discusses the de-extinction movement. De-extinction is a controversial concept that aims to recreate a previously extinct species using the remains of that species' DNA, which could potentially increase the genetic variability of species. This method is being studied with some success for small-scale passenger pigeons and is potentially a pathway to learning more about the bird, or a path to becoming the first bird in history to become twice extinct. The wisdom of learning from failures and mistakes is undeniable. However, it is extraordinarily rare. This gap is not due to a lack of thirst to learn, but because many do not know where to start and have different versions of how to help the Earth be sustained and renewed. There are a large number of genuinely interested people who want to help and learn from past wrongs to improve the future performance of ecosystems and the natural network. We must be aware of the changes occurring in the environment and make a conscious effort not to follow in the footsteps of our predecessors who took the wild environment for granted and to begin a new path to living in harmony with the rest of the world.
