Essay / Identity transformations from past to present - 1522
Each individual has a distinct past that shapes their identity. The situations people face can cause them to have distorted perceptions of themselves. These distorted perceptions cause us to lose sight of the important things in life. In order to discover their true identity, they will need to create a path of personal transformation. Scott Momaday, Victor Joseph and Macklemore have different pasts but they all share a common thread: reconnecting with the important things in life. Many variables affect everyone's destiny, but it is their physical and psychological factors that predispose their vulnerability. Vulnerability can often be seen as a sign of weakness, but these protagonists are examples of those who accept their vulnerabilities. In Scott Momaday's The Way to Rainy Mountain, Sherman Alexie's Smoke Signals, and Macklemore's Life, the protagonists reclaim their true identities by becoming vulnerable. Although at the lowest point in their lives, each protagonist maintains a sense of security by remembering their past. In The Way to Rainy Mountain by Scott Momaday, Momaday reclaims his past by remembering the time he spends with his grandmother. When her grandmother died, Momaday remembers her: “standing in front of the wood stove one winter morning and turning meat in a large iron skillet; sitting at the south window, leaning over her pearls, and then when her vision failed. . . when the weight of age fell upon her; pray. I remember her most often in prayer” (2507). He strongly desires to be at her grave and longs to belong to her by visiting her spiritually. Momaday looks at her grave in despair instead of embracing all the life she gave him. When Momaday remembers his grandmother, he loses hope and becomes... middle of paper ...... these struggles will live in him forever. Whether joining forces with family, friends, or fans, each protagonist finds a strong support network as they face difficulties and overcome their monsters. Through the struggles of Scott Momaday, Victor Joseph and Macklemore, they find their true identities. Their despair leads them to realize that they must change themselves. During their journey, facing their past, they do not let it destroy their future, but allow it to change their future. Thanks to support, each protagonist overcomes life's greatest difficulties, or its monsters. Society makes it easy to lose sight of your true self and potential. Constant pressures from society impact people's choices, but everyone defines their own destiny. Scott Momaday, Arnold Joseph and Macklemore all find their true purpose in life by changing their lives.
