  • Essay / Rhetorical analysis of President Barack Obama's speech...

President Barack Obama begins using logos when he talks about "the 1997 international agreement banning the use of chemical weapons" (Obama par 5 ). He goes on to assert that the Syrian government's action was "not only a violation of international law, [but] also a danger to [national] security" (Obama para 10). His main argument to support his claim that the chemical attack poses a danger to the American people and the world is that if no action is taken to deter the Syrian regime, then other "tyrants" will not hesitate to also use poison gas as a weapon. (Obama par. 11). The president's logic is reasonable and therefore effective in convincing the audience. President Obama is not trying to justify his position on the subject with faulty logic. It makes it clear that the reason for taking action against Bashar al-Assad's regime is to prevent what happened to the Syrian victims from happening to other peoples around the world. The majority of the public is indeed convinced that involvement in Syria is necessary to preserve the nation.
