  • Essay / Distribution System Case Study - 837

A distribution system connects consumers to the high voltage transmission system. Due to lower voltage, and therefore higher current, the I2R loss in a distribution system is considerably high compared to that of a high voltage transmission system. Resistance is more dominant in the distribution system and it is also sensitive to temperature.1.2 Classification of distribution systems: A distribution system can be classified according to:1.2.1 Nature of current: Depending on the nature of current, the distribution system can be relegated as (a) DC distribution system and (b) AC distribution system. Nowadays, AC distribution system is universally adopted for electric power distribution because it is simpler and more economical than DC distribution system. 1.2.2 Types of Construction: Depending on the type of construction, the distribution system can be relegated as (a) overhead system and (b) underground (cable) system. Operation and maintenance of the overhead system is 5 to 10 times cheaper than the equivalent capacity of the underground system. Generally, the underground system is practiced in places where the overhead system is impractical or prohibited by local laws.1.2.3 Scheme of
