The attack on Pearl Harbor changed the course of American history. On Sunday, December 7, 1941, on Oahu, Hawaii, many American ships were in port on a beautiful day. The soldiers were enjoying the incredible weather on this cool Sunday morning. Yamamoto Isoroku, a Japanese naval officer, was the mastermind behind the attack on the American naval base at Pearl Harbor. Americans believed that Japan was angry with the United States for stopping imports, such as bullets and guns. They also believed that the war was far away and their shores were safe. That Sunday at 7:48 a.m., Chicho Naguno, commander of the Japanese attack, led twenty-one planes to "wami momi," the Hawaiian-created name for the base, meaning "Pearl Waters." It was the first time in American history that it had been attacked on its own soil. The attack on Pearl Harbor set the United States on a war path that led to millions of soldiers going to war and dying to protect our country.
