  • Essay / Can normal people be as brave as Shane in "Shane" by...

The novel Shane written by Jack Schaefer is the story of a mysterious stranger who entered the Wyoming Valley at the late 1800s. He was introduced into the life of Joe Starrett, an honest and hardworking farmer from Wyoming. The stranger rarely talks about himself except that his name is Shane. Even though Joe knows little about Shane, he invites Shane to stay at his house for a while. While Shane stays with the Starrett family, he discovers Fletcher, a rich and greedy man, and realizes that he is trying to take over the land of Joe and the other settlers. He decides to stay with Joe and help him and the others. When Fletcher sees that Shane is a strong man, he sends a few guys to defeat Shane, but Shane and Joe fight them. Later, Fletcher brings in a new guy named Stark Wilson, whose sole goal is to remove Shane from the picture. At the climax, they have a final duel in the saloon between Shane, Stark Wilson and Fletcher. First, Shane shoots and kills Stark Wilson, but Fletcher shoots Shane from behind. The shot does not kill Shane, but merely injures him. Shane turns and shoots and kills Fletcher. Shane makes up his mind and leaves without saying goodbye to the Starrett family he loves because he understands that as long as he is there, someone will always come for him and that will put Joe and his family in danger. When reading the novel Shane, it stands to reason that the characters possess heroic qualities such as honesty, courage, integrity as well as villainous qualities such as cowardice and greed. Shane, the protagonist of this adventure is not only a wise and honest mentor, but a man of integrity. For example, Shane realizes that he must subtly stop Joe from complying with the Stark shooter Wi...... middle of paper ...... a being; his humanity is replaced by cruelty, brutality and greed. When Fletcher and Wright are about to leave Joe's house, Wright tells Joe, "You need someone to take care of you" (110). Wright is just trying to take out Joe's rage so that Joe will probably come to the bar without thinking much about the deal so that Wright can take out Joe. Wright is so inhumane that he tries to kill a man for his land and help Fletcher with his plan. The character qualities of the novel Shane make the characters stand out as heroes and villains. It's unfair that Shane had to leave and didn't get a chance to say goodbye to his loved ones because of Fletcher's greed. Shane's bravery will encourage others in town to stand up to people like Fletcher and Wilson in the future, without anyone's help. Can people with normal lives be brave like Shane?
