Essay / Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions
Critique of Ethical Issues and Themes in the Helping ProfessionsWorkers in the helping professions experience a massive amount of ethical and professional issues. These questions affect the practice of counseling and the relationship with the client. The book Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions by Corey, Corey, and Hallanan presents many of the themes one will encounter throughout their careers. The book also gives possible solutions to problems and stimulates different ways of thinking about problems. The authors of this book provide good knowledge and information for anyone in a helping profession. A theme that emerges from the book is the counselor as a person and a professional. It is impossible to completely separate your personal life from your professional life. Each person brings certain characteristics of themselves, including values, personality traits, and experiences. A good argument made by Corey, Corey, and Callahan (2010) is to seek personal therapy. Talking with colleagues or a therapist will keep counselors on their toes and allow them to resolve any issues that may arise. It could also prevent advisors from finding themselves in a bad situation. Another good point made in this book was countertransference. Therapists will have an opinion and certain reactions will manifest. It's not easy to hide your emotions, but a good therapist will keep the goal in sight and keep moving forward. After all, the help provided by advisors is intended for the client. One aspect that was not emphasized enough in this theme was how often counselors should attend therapy. The more a therapist seeks therapy, the more it can benefit them. Talk more often with ...... middle of paper ...... a decision. As the many cases presented in this book show, sometimes there is no right or wrong answer. A good counselor will use their skills, experience and training to overcome obstacles in therapy and provide the client with excellent support service. ReferencesCorey, G, Corey, M and Callanan, P.
