Essay / Gender Roles in Hildy and Her Daughter Friday - 1119
Everything women are not, these men are; they are important, powerful, often disorderly as with his colleagues, and especially in a position of power over Hildy. Specifically, Walter is the epitome of male roles due to his good looks and his position as head of the newspaper, which would make him responsible for Hildy and her work. The Walter archetype is also seen in the first Tootsie movie we watched with the TV producer. He is also a well-dressed man of power who manipulates the women around him, either to do what he wants or to establish a relationship with him. While Walter only has Hildy to manipulate, which he does throughout the film in an attempt to convince Hildy to write for the newspaper and never leave it, Ron has an entire cast of women. Ron primarily plays with the emotions of women, Julie in particular, and uses his position of power to degrade and often subjugate women to his ideals. And very rarely do they object until Dorothy enters the room.
